      Health, Quality, Beauty, Honesty,
           & Service NOT Quantity
Thank you for visting my site. I hope you enjoy your visit. I am a hobby breeder of AKC Shih Tzu. We do not have puppies at all times as many sites do. Many of my dogs are pets and the dogs that have pups are not bred every heat. My adults have homes with several of my family members. This is a hobby and not a full fledged kennel operation. My mission is to breed quality puppies in a loving and clean environment. While you can find less expensive pups, be assured that I have been breeding for almost 10 years now with prior years of studying breeding. My dogs are tested and visit my vet regularly. They are fed premium foods and reccommended additives as needed. They go without nothing. My adults are kept healthy and happy to produce top notch puppies. Most of my customers are repeat or by referral. Each mom sees our vet as does each puppy. Buy from a breeder with experience who knows which dogs should be bred and which dogs are just pet quality!  Each of my dogs is treated with dignity and respect.  My dogs are my beloved pets and are current on all their vaccinations, groomed and spoiled. Not only are my dogs checked with my vet to make sure that they are fit for breeding, but I have state of the art testing done with DOGenes at great expense to make sure that they are not carriers of JRD, the most common genetic defect in the breed. I base my breeding program on that information. When choosing to buy a puppy from Meadowlyn's what you will get is a well rounded, healthy and happy furbaby that is ready to be a member of your family!

Please note that we are hobby breeders as a family venture and not all of the dogs live with me. This is something that my parents have gotten to enjoy in their golden years as they help me. I do all of the whelping and have the moms with me during the last weeks of their pregnancy and up until the pups are weaned. I have a nursery set up in my home for this purpose.  I try to give the adults a "home" where they are pets, taking them with me in the car running errands and for walks. It is very important to give them a normal life and "not" be treated as just a breeding dog. They are so much more to me than that!
Before Considering a Shih Tzu as Your Next Family Member

Although the Shih Tzu is a fairly easy dog to take care of, they do not do well being left alone for long periods of time. They are a very social little dog and demand human companionship. They are fine being left alone for 7-8 hours a day and are soooo happy to see you when you get home. But beyond that, they tend to get depressed and can act out if they are left alone for long periods of time or not given some "one on one" time. I find that even with all of the dogs that I have, it is imperative that I hold, brush and play with each dog sometime during the day. They will compete for attention and I do my best to make sure their social needs are met. Even bath time can be a fun time for them. They like the human touch, the brushing and the pampering. The others all watch and wait in turn. It's really quite comical.

The times they do appear to want to run for the hills is when I prepare a puppy for his new home. I make the puppy goody bag, bathe the puppy and and put a little bow on the puppy and into a little soft crate for safe keeping and to stay clean and "presentable" until the new parents come.By the way, it doesn't always work out that way, the puppy can make him or herself a mess!  Well, they are starting to catch on. They know when the bags are being made someone is leaving. Shih Tzu are so smart. They kind of get quiet as to say not me....I'll just hide over here for awhile

Their exercise needs are minimal and a short walk should suffice. They do love their walks and they walk with such pride. They have such a proud little walk, holding their heads and tails so high. Look at me, I'm out for a walk! They especially like to go out when wearing a new jacket or sweater, they are such show-offs!

Their upkeep is most intensive in the brushing of their hair, yes, they actually have hair. A quick brush-out daily will keep up their coat so you don't have to deal with mats later. Either that or you can keep the hair short so it's not a problem. It is important that you consider the grooming expense when making your decision if this is the right dog for you.

You need to research the breed to make sure that this is the dog that you want. Shih Tzu's live 12-14 years and that's a considerable commitment. One thing for sure, if you decide on a Shih Tzu, you'll get back what you give 10 fold. They are incredible! AND NO, they are not yappy.....But, they are very good watch dogs and do bark and carry on when they know something is not right. They might be small but they have the heart of gold. In my opinion, there is not a better companion dog. They are simply amazing!

Meadowlyn's specialty is bringing quality AKC Shih Tzu in small standard and tiny type,  which some call Imperials to the Reno, Carson City and surrounding areas. I also service Northern California. My puppies usually grow to be in the 4 to 7 pound range, most of them being 6-8 pounds. I do, at times, have small standards in the 9-10 pound range.  I am familiar with what my particular breedings produce so I am fairly accurate at weight estimates.   Extensive research has been done by me to achieve the rare colors, nice flat noses, short legs and cobby bodies. Above all, I put emphasis on health and temperament. I have learned much in a network with other breeders across the United States and have applied this knowledge to my breeding. I continue to learn and grow as we discover new tidbits of information about the breed and this information will always be applied to my breeding program. I will, from time to time, have females available who are retiring that are about 4 years old. I am careful to make sure that they are socialized and can make the transition to go into loving homes and be able to walk on a leash, ride in a car, be potty trained for the most part and be healthy both physically and mentally. It is hard to let them go but by screening potential homes, I find that I am able to place them and feel good about it. They will go to their new homes up to date on their shots and spayed and I will send them with their medical records and their history. I often include baby and other pictures during their time with me.
BUYING A QUALITY PUPPY WILL SAVE YOU MONEY IN THE LONG RUN. Each puppy is taken to my vet for a thorough exam at 8 weeks of age. You will be provided a copy of that very same report. No puppy leaves without having this all inclusive exam. Each puppy is covered with a 2 year guarantee regarding any covered genetic issues. The replacement will be in the form of a puppy of equal or greater value. I strive to satisfy my customers. Any issues, however small, are disclosed prior to your decision to purchase your puppy. To me, my reputation is everything. I stive to breed the healthiest puppies possible. I am not a person who wants to bring unhealthy dogs into the world just to make a buck. I will spend the extra money for testing, better nutrition, shots on my adults and puppies current, keeping a clean environment for all by making cleaning an important part of my day. I can say that I am proud of my ethics and carry it in other areas of my life. I can provide you with references of other people who have purchased from me and do so with great pride.
Meadowlyn's beautiful Shih Tzu puppies come in small standard and Imperial size. We provide chocolates, reds, golds, blacks, all in solid colors. We also have parti-colors in all of the above colors and brindle. All adults are kept in top condition at all times. I do not take short cuts when it comes to my dogs. The adults are well socialized and pleasant to be around. They are well behaved and expected to be so. It is my feeling that dogs with boundaries are happier and feel loved. My females have been great moms with their litters. They are raised in a busy household with lots of coming and goings and other pets. I do however keep mama and babies quiet the first couple of weeks to enjoy that special time together.

I continue to read and learn and am not afraid to make a change if I see a better way. Puppies are handled by me daily from birth and put through a Bio-Sensor program to stimulate their growth, both physically and mentally. You get everything that you get from another breeder plus more. I do not have a job outside of the home. My dogs are a full time job and a full time joy!

As our economy has changed, so have the the type of people who breed. It is important that you purchase from a breeder who is breeding for the love of the breed, not just a way to make ends meet. It took me a very long time and quite a bit of money to get the right dogs to produce quality puppies. Watch out for breeders who have several breeds and mix and match what they have creating designer breeds. It took me many years to learn about the healthy lines to add to my program. Not every Shih Tzu is of a quality to be a breeder. If I add a new line to my program, I will have tests done on that dog to ensure that it is in fact, up to my standards. I assure you that there are less expensive puppies out there. Be sure to ask if JRD tests have been done on the parents. Be an educated buyer, ask the breeder how long they have been breeding and ask for references. Often, you can tell just by a phone conversation how knowledgable the breeder is by asking questions. The AKC website has a list of questions that will help you in finding a breeder who has the experience, knowledge and passion to be doing their job correctly. The bottom line is you may be getting a bargain now but will find out in later years, by expensive vet bills, that it is really not a bargain at all.

For those of you interested in the Imperials, I keep my babies until 10- 12 weeks. By that time, there is NO question as far as size is concerned. Be wary of breeders who claim that a puppy will be 5 lbs when it is only a week old.  There is no possible way at that age to give an accurate weight. I have been known to lower a price on a pup when at 4 weeks (even after a deposit has been placed), it appeared to be of a lower weight. I give the customer the option to buy the same puppy but at a reduced rate. To me, honesty is everything. If it is your desire to have an Imperial and an Imperial only, the deposit can be placed on another puppy.

I also give a 10% discount to repeat buyers, military and to Sr. Citizens* If you are looking for a puppy from a breeder with lots of experience, honesty, service after the sale and a quality puppy, you have found your breeder. Please make sure when placing a holding fee on a puppy as these fees are non refundable.

Please be advised that there are no refunds on holding fees/deposits for cancellations. It is very important that you are serious about your decision to take a puppy into your home before sending a deposit. In certain situations, holding fees/deposits can be used towards another puppy in the future. This is totally at my disgression and several matters are taken into consideration
